Wonderful and rare set of 36 Regency mahogany dining chairs with ropetwist back stretcher and sabre legs all round, they have drop-on seats over cane, are stamped H H on the frame and made to a design in the pattern book of Gillows of Lancaster, not stamped as such, but definitely by Gillows, English circa 1809
32 inches high, 19 inches wide, 22 inches maximum depth.
Original throughout except recaned and squabs replaced.
As reported by Susan Stuart in her book, "Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840", after the victory of Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar Gillows designed several chairs in commemoration and they appear in the Lancaster Estimate Sketch Book. Patterns were named Trafalgar, Wellington and Bonaparte. The design of these 36 chairs – note the rope backs – is one of these and dated by Stuart to 1809. Another distinguishing feature is the “elegant concave curves on both front and back legs and flat side profiles. Sometimes the front legs were reeded.” (Stuart I, p. 136 – 137).
That they are not stamped by Gillows is not unusual. As increasingly more documentation is published, a picture of some of Gillows’ practices has begun to emerge. The greater part of the furniture made by Gillows on commission was not signed with its stamp. While articles made on speculation or for consignment were more frequently stamped. Documented suites of furniture usually bear no stamp while smaller, more portable works frequently do. A suite of chairs as long as this would certainly have been made on commission. The style and craftsmanship of Gillows works speak of their origin.
There is, however, further indication of a Gillows origin. Several of these chairs bear the stamp “HH”. Susan Stuart (II, p. 245) reports that “HH is one of the most common initial stamps recorded on [Gillows] chairs made during the first half of the 19th century” and proceeds to list many documented examples. Note should be made of a suite of 24 in the Mere Hall sale (Christies, 5/23/2004, lot 106) some of which, unusually, bore both the Gillows and the HH stamp.
