pair of antique sofas
Very fine near pair of George III period antique sofas standing on tall square taper legs with spade feet. They are a tremendous scale and must have been made for an important large country house. They are upholstered using correct two stage hand stitched unsprung horsehair. This upholstery method predates the invention of the coil spring, which explains why pre-Victorian upholstery appears so elegant - the lack of springs means that the design appears light and elegant, with tall legs and thin arms.

English circa 1790 £28,000
